JRA_Serta International_Building in Prairie
Serta is the best-selling premium mattress company and the fastest growing manufacturer in the United States. In 2004, the company asked the architecture firm of Annex 5/ Epstein International, Inc. to create a corporate headquarters building that would consolidate facilities which were currently spread throughout several communities into one modern building. Choosing Prairie Stone in Hoffman Estates as its favored corporate setting, the architects asked Jacobs/Ryan Associates to assist them in studying two different sites which could be developed in a sustainable manner.

The building is now sited within a prairie landscape overlooking a central wetland. The landscape design aggregates trees into woodland clusters, while leaving the prairie to flourish in the sun it requires. The prairie was seeded with a mix of common prairie grasses including what are known as “native aggressives” for quick establishment. Vegetated swales will carry stormwater to cleanse and infiltrate the subsoil. Close to the building is a zone called a “cultivated prairie” which is a meadow planted with grasses, forbs and a select number of ornamental perennials. A variety of hard surfaces include crushed granite, bluestone chips and Black Mexican River Stones. Consulting with the Village, the Property Owners Association and a Biologist was integral to the approval process for the project.

Scope of services for the project included landscape testimony and presentations, approvals; development of prairie landscape concepts; assistance to the architect in developing hardscape concepts; full construction documentation; and construction administration including plant material tagging. 2009 ASLA Illinois Chapter Honor Award.
